No child should have to stand alone in immigration court!

Having an attorney matters. Especially for immigrant children. In fact, from 2005 to 2018, 70% of children with legal representation were able to win their immigration cases and stay in the United States, compared to just 9% among those that did not have legal representation. The majority of children who are unable to access legal services are those that arrive in the US as unaccompanied minors. This means they must appear in immigration court alone. After long and dangerous journeys in search of safety in the United States, immigrant children are forced to navigate the challenges of the immigration system with no one to guide them.

While the representation gap for unaccompanied minors is a problem all across the United States, in few places is it as glaring as on Long Island. In 2021, 2,592 unaccompanied immigrant children resettled in Nassau and Suffolk counties, joining the more than 16,000 others who have arrived to Long Island since 2014. More immigrant children needing attorneys means that the demand for CARECEN’s legal services continues to grow. With your help we can close the representation gap and give an immigrant child hope for a new life.

This #GivingTuesday, you can ensure that a child’s day in court is fair and that they have a fighting chance at safety. We can support immigrant children upon their arrival but we must work together!
